🛠 Tools & Parts You'll Need

Video walk through- https://youtu.be/MXaf6zG8syc?si=T4SW928cLTfRT_-4

Parts:

  • Upgraded ignition coils (997-style)

    • Part Number: 997.602.104.02

  • Bolts for new coils (2 per coil)

    • Size: M6 x 40mm

    • OEM Part Number: 900.385.025.01

  • Optional: Spark plugs (highly recommended during coil replacement)

Tools:

  • 10mm socket

  • E10 external Torx socket (for upgraded bolts)

  • Allen wrench or hex socket (for old bolts)

  • Torque wrench (use caution – don't overtighten into aluminum)

  • Light source or flashlight

  • Gloves

  • Safety glasses

📋 Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Preparation

  • Ensure the engine is cool.

  • If installed, remove the exhaust system for easier access.

    • The car in the video had a muffler delete, making the area more accessible.

  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal for safety.

2. Locate the Ignition Coils

  • Look behind the exhaust bracket—you’ll see a metal plate with two 10mm bolts.

  • Remove these bolts to expose the ignition coils.

3. Remove Old Coils

  • Older coils are secured with Allen bolts.

  • Disconnect the weatherproof electrical connectors:

    • Squeeze the release tab and pull gently.

  • Remove the old coils. Note any visible wear or damage (e.g., cracked boots).

4. (Optional) Inspect & Replace Spark Plugs

  • While coils are removed, check spark plugs.

  • If worn or if you're experiencing misfires (like cylinder 6 in the video), replace them now.

  • Non-dealer plugs can be found online for ~$6 each vs. ~$16 from a dealership.

5. Install Upgraded 997 Ignition Coils

  • Plug in the new ignition coils (they are longer and thicker than the originals).

  • Use the new M6 x 40mm bolts.

    • Requires E10 Torx socket.

  • Carefully hand-tighten, then torque appropriately (don’t overtighten into the aluminum valve cover).

6. Reassemble

  • Reattach the metal plate and any brackets.

  • If removed, reinstall the exhaust components.

  • Reconnect the battery terminal.

7. Final Checks

  • Start the engine and listen for any irregularities.

  • If misfire symptoms persist, further diagnostics may be needed (fuel injector, compression, etc.).

⚠️ Tips & Warnings

  • Don’t overtighten bolts into the aluminum head — risk of stripping or cracking.

  • The upgraded coils offer better performance and durability but may require spacers or shielding to fit under the original dust cover.

  • If you're unsure of torque specs, consult a factory service manual or a Porsche tech forum.

✅ Outcome

If successful, your Porsche 996 should now:

  • Start more smoothly

  • Eliminate misfires (especially cylinder-specific ones)

  • Run more efficiently
